Gary L. Loomis, M.A., Ph.D / Founder & President
Dr. Loomis has extensive experience in the development, commercialization and intellectual property aspects of advanced materials, products and processes for a variety of hi-tech industries, including chemical / pharmaceutical, biotechnology and medical technology. He has particular expertise in applications of biomaterials for functional medical devices, drug delivery systems and matrices for tissue engineering. His experience in research, product development, manufacturing, technology assessment, and intellectual property spans more than 35 years. During a recent tenure at Provasis Therapeutics Inc., San Diego, CA he held dual positions as Chief Technology Officer and Director of Intellectual Property. He is a former Warner-Lambert R&D Director and he has held various positions in the Central Research & Development Department and the Plastic Products Department of E.I. DuPont de Nemours, Inc. He is a prolific inventor with thirty-one U.S. patents and numerous foreign patents issued to date. Dr. Loomis was also a nominee for the 2003 bioFUSION award. These awards are presented annually by T-Sector and BIOCOM / San Diego to outstanding members of the San Diego biotech/medical community.
Dr. Loomis received an M.A. in chemistry and a Ph.D. in organic chemistry (minor in biochemistry) from The Johns Hopkins University. Subsequently he was a National Institutes of Health (NIH) post-doctoral research fellow at the Imperial College of Science and Technology in London, England where he worked with Prof. Sir Derek H. R. Barton, Nobel Laureate and at L’École Normale Supérieure, Paris, France where he worked in the laboratories of Prof. Marc Julia. He has served as an adjunct professor at The Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden, where he developed and presented a graduate level course in polymer synthesis. He was an instructor at Widener University he presented courses in biochemistry and polymer chemistry, and as an instructor for the American Chemical Society he conceived, developed and presented a short-course entitled “Polymer Science for Engineers”.
As a registered U.S. Patent Agent since 2004, Dr. Loomis is experienced in the preparation and prosecution of U.S. and foreign patent applications as well as the formulation of patent strategies for a variety of technologies.
Dr. Loomis works extensively with major U.S. law firms to provide expert witness services for patent litigation and product liability proceedings as well as inter partes review (IPR) proceedings.
He has been a member of the American Chemical Society, the Society for Biomaterials, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the Intellectual Property Section, State Bar of CA, the Los Angeles Intellectual Property Law Association, the Orange County Patent Law Association and the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA).
